Clinical Pharmacology

Catherine H. Smith

Overview

Drug therapy forms a critical component of the management of skin disease, and the advent of targeted biological therapy has led to transformational improvements in outcomes for many patients. Clinical pharmacology deals with the actions, mechanisms of action, uses, adverse effects and fate of drugs in humans, and underpins all aspects of drug therapy from novel drug development through to safe, effective prescribing. Knowledge of these principles is essential to ensure optimal use of drug therapy in dermatology.
